Is it the biggest hat? The most expensive? The one with the most feathers?

Not necessarily. Two extraordinary hat competitions held in October 2026 remind us that winning headwear is about much more than decoration. After more than 30 years in millinery, I know that imagination, craftsmanship, proportion, and confidence make the difference.

From Australia to Key West: Hats Take Center Stage

Australia's Geelong Cup, first held in 1872, has become known for more than horse racing. Its race-day fashion competitions celebrate elegant dressing and spectacular millinery. At the October 21, 2026 event, Kylie Bannerman won Best Millinery with a handmade maroon-and-gold headpiece.

Thousands of miles away, the Key West Headdress Ball celebrated its 43rd year. Part of Florida's famous Fantasy Fest, which began in 1979, the competition transforms headwear into theatrical art. This year's winner, Virginia Wark, received $2,500 for a dazzling disco-inspired creation.

Two very different celebrations. One thing in common: the power of a remarkable hat.

Five Things That Make a Hat a Winner

  1. Originality. Does the hat have personality? A memorable design makes people look twice.
  2. Proportion. Does it flatter the face and complement the wearer? Bigger isn't always better.
  3. Craftsmanship. Are the feathers, trims, foundation, and finishing beautifully constructed?
  4. Coordination. Does it complete the outfit? Notice how our bronze feathers complement the champagne gown.
  5. Confidence. Does the wearer feel beautiful and comfortable? Proper fit changes everything.
